Researcher Showcases Breakthrough in Rapid E. coli Detection for Dairy Water Reuse

Lily Bermingham recently presented her cutting-edge work at the ICI 77th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium. Her research focuses on a fluorescence-based LAMP (Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification) assay designed for the rapid detection of E. coli in dairy-soiled water.
As the agricultural sector moves toward more sustainable practices, the ability to reuse water safely is paramount. Lily’s work addresses a critical gap in current operations: the need for practical, on-farm monitoring of reclaimed water quality. By offering a faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional culture-based laboratory methods, this LAMP assay allows for real-time decision-making directly on the farm.
Importantly, this innovation aligns with the stringent requirements of EU Regulation 2020/741 on minimum requirements for water reuse. The development of this technology ensures that reclaimed water meets high safety standards while reducing the financial and temporal burden on farmers.
