UNIVERSWATER Project Highlighted by Partner University of Western Macedonia at Annual Research Symposium

The UNIVERSWATER project was prominently featured at the 2nd Symposium of Research Projects hosted by project partner, the University of Western Macedonia (UoWM), on June 12-13, 2025.

The presentation, delivered to an engaged audience of over 80 members of the research community, detailed the project’s ambitious goals, core activities, and the expected impact on modern agriculture. A key focus of the discussion was the Greek use case, which is being coordinated by the UoWM research team.

Assistant Professor Stavroula Tsitsifli, a key collaborator from the Networks and Advanced Services Laboratory (TELNAS), delivered the presentation. She outlined how UNIVERSWATER aims to develop a holistic and interoperable Decision Support System (DSS) to optimize the use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides.

The presentation placed special emphasis on the project’s pilot application in the environmentally significant area of Mikri Prespa, Greece. The UoWM team is leading efforts there to address critical water management challenges through the deployment of smart technologies. This includes contributing to data collection, developing advanced machine learning models to predict irrigation needs, and creating mechanisms for monitoring crop diseases and water quality in real-time.

The UNIVERSWATER project, which is scheduled for completion in November 2027, is expected to deliver innovative tools that empower farmers and water managers to make more informed decisions, ultimately leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural practices.
