UNIVERSWATER Research Presented at IGARSS 2026 in Washington, D.C.

UNIVERSWATER research reached the international Earth Observation community at IGARSS 2026, held in Washington, D.C., where project partner BEYOND Centre of Excellence / National Observatory of Athens presented recent work developed within the project.

The presentation, entitled “Comparative assessment of multimodal Earth Observation data for soil moisture estimation,” explores how different Earth Observation and environmental datasets can be combined to improve soil moisture mapping across Europe.

The research brings together information from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and ERA5, alongside foundation model embeddings, to assess their potential for supporting accurate and scalable pan-European soil moisture estimation.

Soil moisture is a key variable for understanding water availability, drought conditions, agricultural productivity and broader hydrological processes. Improving the way it is monitored can therefore support more informed and timely water management decisions.

The work presented at IGARSS reflects UNIVERSWATER’s wider ambition to make better use of Earth Observation, digital technologies and innovative data approaches to strengthen water monitoring and support more sustainable water management.
