Working together for cleaner water: Inside the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster

The ZeroPollution4Water Cluster (ZP4WC) is a European collaborative initiative uniting EU-funded research and innovation projects committed to protecting groundwater and drinking water quality in line with the European Green Deal and the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan.
Originating from a coalition of Horizon Europe 2022 projects, the Cluster was established to address some of Europe’s most pressing water challenges, including groundwater contamination, diffuse pollution, climate-driven pressures on water resources, and emerging risks affecting drinking water safety. By fostering strong collaboration between projects, the Cluster bridges research, innovation, and policy, supporting evidence-based decision-making at EU level.
The Cluster’s mission focuses on:
- Preventing groundwater contamination and protecting water quality against the impacts of global and climate change
- Safeguarding drinking water sources, from catchment protection to treatment and safe distribution
- Developing innovative monitoring, treatment, and risk management solutions for water systems
- Advancing Europe’s zero-pollution objectives across the entire water cycle
As part of its ongoing expansion, the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster now brings together six Horizon Europe projects and three LIFE projects, strengthening cross-programme cooperation and broadening its scientific and technological scope. This expanded vision allows the Cluster to better address emerging contaminants, diffuse pollution, ageing infrastructure, and climate-related risks affecting both groundwater and drinking water systems.
The Cluster’s key objectives include:
- Capitalising on research and innovation results and identifying future needs
- Producing joint policy briefs and recommendations to support EU water policy
- Demonstrating effective water management practices through real-world case studies
Within this context, UNIVERSWATER has recently joined the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster, contributing its expertise in integrated water management, monitoring technologies, and data-driven solutions. By collaborating with fellow Cluster members, UNIVERSWATER will support the development of preventive and mitigating strategies that enhance water resilience and reduce pollution risks across diverse European environments.
Through strengthened synergies and coordinated action, the ZeroPollution4Water Cluster aims to deliver tangible impact—supporting cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and a pollution-free water future for Europe.
